Insert, Over Molding and Two-Shot Molding

Insert Molding

Insert molding is a process that requires an insert, typically metal, to be pre-placed in the tool for injected plastic to flow around. Encapsulating the insert with plastic creates a single molded plastic piece that’s generally stronger than one created using secondary assembly. Loading the insert into the mold is accomplished using manual handloads or automation. Automation minimizes human error, improves efficiencies, and ensures optimal cycle times.

Overmolding

Overmolding is a process that results in a seamless bond of multiple materials into a single part or product. It typically includes a rigid, plastic-based substrate overlaid with a pliable, rubber-like thermoplastic elastomer to give a soft-touch grip. Our team of experts will help make sure you achieve the proper bond, and part function your team is striving for.

Two-shot Molding

Two-shot, also referred to as dual-shot, double-shot, multi-shot and overmolding, is a plastic molding process in which two different plastic resins are molded together in a single machining cycle. Two-shot molding is typically used when production demand is too high for overmolding.

Insert molding and overmolding are somewhat similar yet distinctly different forms of multi-material injection molding. To choose the process, function, and outcome that best aligns with your project, reach out to the MDI experts to help get your quality part into production quickly.
